Corfu lost most of its Jewish population throughout World War 2, mainly in Auschwitz. Most people deported from Corfu walked straight into gas chambers, standing no chance in front of the Nazi brutality. Some of them were kept for forced labour. After liberation, only a few returned to Corfu.

Corfu had a thriving Jewish community prior to World War 2. Unfortunately, the community was decimated once the island was taken over by the Nazi regime, with only a small number of Jews left now.
Corfu had three synagogues before World War 2. Two of them were bombed by Nazis. Only one of them is still up and running today. It’s mostly seen as a tourist attraction, rather than a religious place.
There are sad stories coming from all over Greece, as multiple communities were decimated during the Holocaust. In fact, Greece had one of the highest killing rates in the whole of Europe.
